Rockdale students dream big, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Rockdale Academy students are dreaming big, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech.

Phylicia Taylor, sixth grade English language arts and social studies teacher, wanted her students to be able to relate to Dr. King's speech, so she asked them about their dreams.

"The kids started raising their hands left and right about what they would like to do and what they would like to see," Taylor said. "I said, 'why don't we write our own "I Have a Dream" speech.'"

From being a homeowner to seeing peace and unity in the world, the students' dreams are profound.

"The students were not only thinking about themselves, their dreams were about other people and what they would like to see in the world, what they would like to see in their own communities," Taylor said. "I thought it was profound that they were selfless, and that's what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was all about. His dreams were not just about him. It was about the world and his community. I thought it was so special that the students were able to grasp that."

Taylor hopes her students learn more than language arts and social studies, but also how to be productive citizens.
