Superintendent's Roundtable with a Twist: CPS Students Lead the Charge for Tomorrow's Schools!

While learning-based field trips to COSI, the Cincinnati Zoo or Kings’ Island, are a typical occurrence for Cincinnati Public School (CPS) students, their most recent voyage to the district’s central office arguably left the largest impact on the future of their education.

On Dec. 6, nearly 100 students from across the district attended a Budget Town Hall, led by Superintendent Iranetta Wright. The session was not only an opportunity for students to express their thoughts, but also a testament to CPS' commitment to inclusivity, transparency and empowering the voices of its young learners.

As the district navigates changes in state formulas, concludes forecasts and grapples with the conclusion of ESSER funding, the perspectives of these young minds are invaluable. The superintendent and CPS leadership recognize the significance of students as key stakeholders and partners in shaping the educational journey.

The superintendent guided the discussion, ensuring a platform for students to share insights, concerns and innovative solutions to the nearly $90 million deficit the district faces if spending levels remain the same. Activities and surveys were presented to the groups of students allowing them to comprehend the budget and work through potential solutions.

As the district moves forward with budget planning for the 2024-2025 school year and beyond, the input gathered from the Budget Town Hall will play a pivotal role. By fostering an environment where student voices are heard and valued, CPS aims to create policies and initiatives that truly resonate with the needs and aspirations of its diverse student body.
